Established in the immediate post-War years, the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development ushered in as a pioneering agency in the field of international financial flows. Its activities were strengthened and broadened with the creation of the affiliates-international finance Corporation and International Development Association-in the subsequent decades. These three institutions, collectively known as the World Bank Group, made significant efforts to promote economic development in the less developed countries not only through direct financial assistance but also through coordinating and encouraging other sources of finance to this end.
