Working capital management is the process of planning and controlling the level and mix of the current assets of the firm as well as financing these assets. Specially, working capital management requires financial managers to decide what quantities of cash, other liquid assets. Accounts receivable, and inventories the firm will hold at any point in time. In addition, financial managers must decide how their current assets are to be financed. Financing choices include the mix of current as well as long-term liabilities. This high degree of divisibility has two important implications for the management of working capital, first, if the management to choose, working capital can be acquired piecemeal to meet immediate needs as they arise. In the management of working capital, the firm is faced with two key questions. First given the level of sales and the relevant cost considerations, what are the optimal amounts of cash assets, account receivable, and inventories that a firm should choose to maintain? Second, given these optimal amounts, what is the most economical way to finance these working capital investments? Sickness in industrial sector as a whole and in Small Scale Sector in particular is a constant cause of concern to Government, financiers and the entrepreneurs. Despite various measures taken by the Govt. from time to time, the problem of sickness continue to persist. Sickness converts not only the productive assets into non-performing ones but also renders the employed manpower jobless. The present study has analysed in depth the inter-disciplinary character of sickness with the support of empirical finding. The causes of sickness have been studied from multi-dimensional angles. The study has identified the major factors that are crucially responsible for sickness in SSI sector. These are lack of finance, diversion of funds, inflexibility of entrepreneurs for adapting themselves to the changing business environment, inappropriate project planning with regard to market analysis and selection of appropriate technology lack of marketing skills and poor marketability besides the lack of raw material, inefficient management practices and power shortage. The study has captured the problem of sickness in right perspective and comes out with findings useful for researchers, planners, financiers, entrepreneurs and those associated with the development of SSI in the country and the states.
