The Indian mutual fund industry has witnessed major transformation and structural changes during the past one and decade as a result of policy initiatives taken by the Government of India to break the monolithic structure of the industry in 1987 by permitting public sector banks and insurance corporations to launch their own funds. Later, in 1993, the Government also permitted the private sector to enter into the mutual fund business. Thus, when 36 mutual funds manage a whopping Rs.1, 01,821 crore in 417 schemes, with an investor base of 2.3 crore, it is vital for both the fund managers as well as investors to know as to how the mutual funds have performed over the years. The present study examines the investment performance of mutual funds during the five-year period from April 1, 1994 to March 31, 1999. The study also investigates the market timing abilities of Indian mutual fund managers. It also examines the structural changes arising in the Indian mutual fund industry during the period 2987 to September 30, 2001.
