POVERTY ALLEVIATION THROUGH SELF EMPLOYMENT
D. CHENNAPPA
The main objective of the book is to make a comprehensive evaluation of the Prime Minister Rozgar Yojana (PMRY) scheme with a view to find out whether and to what extent such a scheme constitutes a viable effective policy tool in providing self-employment opportunities to the educated unemployed youth.
The study contains a good blend of theory discussion and empirical scheme. It is an inductive analysis for evaluating the impact of the PMRY scheme in terms of beneficiaries, opinions of bankers (funding agency) and DICs-officials (implementing agency) were collected, anaysed and interpreted. Moreover, attempt is made to identify the "grass-root causes" for the failure of the self-employment scheme through the diagnosis of a comparative study. The study has compared the performance of the scheme among the backward, developing and developed districts and the Industrial, Business and Service sectors in the three selected districts of Andhra Pradesh in Telangana region, namely, Ranga Reddy, Nalgonda and Mahabubnagar districts.
The study throws light not only on the self-employment scheme under the study, but also on the strategy of 'self-employment' as a whole. The important inferences and conclusions drawn from the study have few reading policy implications.
It is hoped that this study would provide useful insights to the planners and policy makers as well as academicians and researchers in the field of self-employment.
