This book takes a point of departure from the most sociological studies of trade unionism in that the hitherto existing studies have focused either on how workers in general and the trade union members in particular perceive and experience trade unionism and on the role and functions of top trade union leadership. Surprisingly enough, trade unions have not been studied from the vantage point of the changing needs and requirements of contemporary Indian society, which embarked upon creating a modern industrial society in the context of globalization and the process of structural readjustment. An attempt has been made in this book to examine the question, whether the present-day trade unions have ever made any serious attempts to effect changes in their structure, functions, ideologies and strategies of action; largely the legacies of the past, in response to sweeping social economic and technological changes that have accompanied the worldwide process of globalization. And whether the trade union leaders particularly at plant level are at least ever really aware of the need for such changes. This book viewed in this way represents an attempt by the author to assess the perception of the public of the current trade unionism at the grass root level. This book is primarily addressed t the postgraduate and research students of M.A. Sociology, Political Science, M.B.A. and M.S.W., Industrial Psychology and Industrial Economics besides the practitioners of industrial relations and personnel management like labour lawyers, management experts, trade union leaders and human rights activists.

Ecologists and Bio-statisticians have used compound statistical distributions to depict the nature of the phenomena operating in connection with insect populations. The suitability of a compound distribution in a given situation will go a long way in making efficient inferences about the phenomenon. The compound distributions are theoretically more complex and consequently, the estimation problem is challenging. In the present study, two new compound distributions are developed and their properties are discussed. One distribution is a compound multinomial multivariate beta-negative binomial one and the other is a compound multinomial multivariate beta-truncated logarithmic series distribution. Recurrence relations have been obtained for computation of successive probabilities. In both cases theoretical regressions have been obtained and these are noted to be essentially non-linear. These are useful to examine the shift in the cases affected at different levels of the intensity of the disease viz., prevalence of TB, the phenomenon of which has been verified to follow the distributions viewed in two different analogies. The present book will prove informative and useful for researchers and academics besides the professionals in the field.

Relationship between the laws that govern the economy and the philosophy that underlines social services is the theme of the present work. Economists ignored this theme because its analysis involves some aethrial considerations and social scientists remained preoccupied with non-economic problems. No more can the subject be ignored if economic development is to be sustained and distortions are to be avoided. Social services can generate the conditions necessary for efficient functioning of the economy and at the same time improve the social conditions of the people. The present work studies this problem in depth and shows that a functional society is necessary for progress. Such a society can be created through well-planned social services. To justify the emphasis on social services the author describes prevailing economic and social conditions, the weaknesses of economic development approaches, the ideology and scope of social services, relationship between economic and social factors of development, various controversies between economic and social factors of development, various controversies between economic and social theories, etc. The existing social services are analysed and results of a field investigation of impact of social services on the economic initiative of the agriculturist families of rural Delhi are presented. The work is interdisciplinary and ideas are derived mostly from Economics, Sociology, Social Work and Ethics.
