SOCIAL GEOGRAPHY OF INDIA
ASHOK KUMAR

‘Social Geography carries with it an inherent confusion. In the popular perception the distinction between social and cultural geography is not very clear. The term ‘social phenomena’ encompasses the whole framework of human interaction with environment, leading to the articulation of social space by diverse human groups in different ways. The end-product of human activity may perceive in the personality of regions; each pattern acquiring its form under the over-arching influence of social structure. Besides the patterns, the way the social phenomena express themselves in space may become a cause of concern as well. As compared to the other branches of geography social geography has a certain amount of recency. Social geography, like its parent discipline, is primarily concerned with space. This distribution forms our pattern. Black immigrants may well be segregated in particular districts, because of their earning power, white attitudes, political decisions, personal preference, and so on. Given the desire for a problem-oriented approach, social problems and their aerial concentration must be identified.

Undoubtedly, this work will be of great help to students of Higher Education like M.A. and M.Phil. Besides the teachers in the field.

ENCYCLOPAEDIA OF GEOGRAPHICAL SCIENCE AND ENVIRONMENT
RAVI MISHRA

Nature is seldom so simple and tractable; instead, it has many different dimensions. This is particularly true of geographical environment because its subject matter includes many complexities, inter-related concepts and phenomenon involving several heads of organization. To obtain an overview of modern geographical environment, a student needs to assimilate a great many ideas. Ideally, a reader would know everything in the present work before beginning to read it.

The present work is aimed to bring together and in simple way the fundamentals of geographical science and environment with special emphasis on the modern viewpoint of the science. The potential scope of this branch is very great and no attempt of any exhaustive treatment of the subject is made here.

POLAR ENVIRONMENT ISSUES AND CHALLENGES
RAVI MISHRA

Polar regions—Artic Ocean in the north and Antarctica in the south—are permanently covered with ice or snow. The average temperatures of even the warmest summer months rise only a few degrees above freezing point and in the summer the seas are covered by floating ice. The core of the high Arctic is a great ocean, 5.5 million sq.m. in area, covered all year by ice that drifts about the North Pole. Antarctica, by contrast, is a disc of land, with the South Pole near its centre, covering an area only a little smaller than the Arctic Ocean and carrying 95 per cent of the world’s permanent ice.
This book covers authentic scientific details on important issues of Polar environment. The themes taken for elaborate description are: The polar regions; Climate of polar regions; Terrestrial environments; Freshwater environments; Marine environments; Plant life; Polar animals; Birds of water and land; Marine mammals; Land mammals; Man and the polar regions etc.
Academics besides the scientists in the field concerned will find this book of utmost use.
