A proper study of the India's freedom movement covers all what prominent Indian figures thought and did for the great cause; it also covers all important reactions and pronouncements of the British leaders and observers. The subject matter has been arranged in two parts. Part I (contains original writings and statements of the great Indian figures, like Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, Maulana Abdul Kalam Azad, C.R. Das, Subhash Chandra Bose, Rajendra Prasad and Sardar Patel. Part II has Important readings representing the British point of view (British Rule in India: Viceroy Lord Curzon's Argument; The Situation in India and Transfer of Power: Statements of Prime Minister Winston Churchill; Message of Lord Mountbatten).

This set consisting of four volumes relating to the story of India's freedom movement covers the glorious role of the Indian National Congress. It also covers important pronouncements and interpretations of the British statesmen, leaders and publicists. Each volume is divided into two parts. Part I deals with all necessary information relating to the role of Indian national Congress and Part II highlights the important readings representing the British point of view. India's freedom movement is inextricably related to her constitutional development. The British rulers sought to make laws, one after, another so as to change their system of administration with the growth of Indian nationalist movement. In other words, they sought to adjust their colonial system with the growing demands of Indian nationalism as far as possible. While the government of India Act of 1858 replaced the rule of the company with the rule of the Crown, the Indian Council Act of 1861 inaugurated the 'policy of association'. The act of 1892 came as an improvement upon the same. Part I of this book contains addresses delivered by the Presidents on the occasion of annual meets of the Congress and Part II has important readings related to India's constitutional development.

The Indian Councils Act of 1892 came as an improvement upon the Act of 1861. The Indian Councils Act of 1909 (Morley-Minto Reforms) came as an improvement upon the previous Act. It also came as a gift of the policy of conciliation and counterpoise of the natives against the natives. Part I of this book contains addresses delivered by the Presidents on the occasion of annual meets of the Congress and Part II has important readings related to India's constitutional development. A study of the addresses delivered by the Presidents of the Indian National Congress on the occasions of the annual meets during the first fourteen years of the present century shows continuity with as well as a minor deviation from the past. While the trend of admiring the British Rule and the goal of achieving self rule within the Empire alongwith the affirmation of loyalty to the British Raj continued, the trend of attack on the wrong of the bureaucratic admiration became more manifest. It signified that the voice of 'sane and faithful nationalism' as termed by Hume, was replaced by the voice of liberal and critical nationalism.
