History, in its broadest sense, is the totality of all past events, although a more realistic definition would limit it to the known past. Historiography is the written record of what is known of human lives and societies in the past and how historians have attempted to understand them. Of all the fields of serious study and literary effort, history may be the hardest to define precisely, because the attempt to uncover past events and formulate an intelligible account of them necessarily involves the use and influence of many auxiliary disciplines and literary forms. Until modern times, history was regarded primarily as a special kind of literature that shared many techniques and effects with functional narrative. The complex relations between literary art and historiography have been and continue to be a subject of serious debate. The concern of all serious historians has been to collect and record facts about the human past and often to discover new facts. They have known that the information they have is incomplete, partly incorrect, or biased and requires careful attention. All have tried to discover in the facts patterns of meaning addressing to the enduring question of human life. All these issues in the context of Teaching of History have been discussed in the present book in detail and therefore, it is hopped that it will be a very useful work for all concerned.

A nation without past is a nation without future. In other words, history alone can successfully guide and shape the future destiny of nation in proper perspective leading to the bright future. Fortunately, Nepal is one of the few nations having a long recorded history stretching for more than twenty five centuries. But distressingly enough, Nepal's invaluable treasure of multi-faceted past experiences have not yet been properly utilized by the present day scholars, politicians, and traders to shape the future destiny of the nation in proper direction. One of the basic reasons for such a state of undesirable affairs is the lack of adequate literature on historical perspective of Nepalese trade relation with India through the ages. Present study has been undertaken to fill this gap in modest form. The present book is a comprehensive study of trade relations between Nepal and the British India. It contains in eight chapters and seventeen appendices including exhaustive bibliography for advance research. First chapter throws light on the Indo-Nepal trade relations through the ages and it evidences in Indian and Nepalese literatures. Politico-economic motives behind the British India trade policy towards Nepal and Nepalese defensive trade policy to maintain its sovereignty has been critically discussed in the second chapter of this book. Third chapter describes the British attitude towards Nepal to secure a trading centre for British manufactured goods and a transit zone of its trans-Himalayan trade. Fourth chapter deals with the Nepalese commercial policy of checks and balances. Every Prime Minister of Nepal was convinced that if the British traders were allowed to move freely in their country for trading, it would ultimately lead the subjugation of Nepal. Fifth chapter is a comprehensive study of exchange of commodities between the British India and Nepal with detailed statistics during the period of review. Some of the important features of the more of trade and traders between the two countries in the nineteenth and first-half of twentieth century have been analysed in the sixth chapter. Seventh chapter describes the impact of Anglo-Nepal trade on the socio-political life and economic development of Nepal, and the last chapter draws conclusion of the book.
