REFORMIST AND CONSERVATIVE TEACHERS
AZRA ABIDI
Teachers, since time immemorial, have belonged to a privileged class. Their life transcends the lives of those they serve. A teacher is not a dictator of notes to docile learners but a dedicated disseminator of knowledge and wisdom to ignite the mind and soul of inquisitive disciples. The values and behaviour of pupil are influenced by a number of factors-teachers being one of them. Teachers play a very important role in the development of their pupils' personality. This is the reason that university and college level teachers should be open minded, progressive and radical so that the students can be positively influenced towards radicalism. This book is an attempt to study the attitudes of university and degree college teachers towards conservatism and radicalism. It deals exhaustively with the background of teachers-gender, family setup, attitudes, activism, professional organizational setting, political interest, religion, etc. The author brings out to the fore the dynamic aspects of teachers' personality, both at the micro and macro levels. This book is thought provoking and will be useful to the teachers and researchers alike.

DEMOGRAPHY AND HEALTH PROFILE OF THE TRIBALS
DIPAK KUMAR ADAK BISWANATH BHATTACHARYA, ROHINI GHOSH MANORANJAN PAL, PREMANAND BHARATI T.S. VASULU
Tribals comprise an appreciable component of the autochthonous population in India, constituting about one-tenth of the total population: the country is not, of course, homogenous in regard to the proportion or the composition of the tribal population. In 1991, about one-fifth of the people in the (new) State of Madhya Pradesh were tribals, numbering 10 million, larger than in any other State in India. This admirably produced collection of studies, entitled "Demography and Health Profile of the Tribal of Madhya Pradesh", edited by Dipak K. Adak, Biswanath Bhattacharya, Rohini Ghosh, Manoranjan Pal, Premananda Bhrarati, and T.S. Vasulu at the Anthropological Survey of India and Indian Statistical Institute (ISI), Kolkata, attempts to answer some of the questions. The studies are based on large-scale survey data, relating to tribals in the region, and also case study and focus group types of data in some specific parts of the region. This collected work is divided into two parts: 1. This different features of the tribes in this region as such mainly based on large scale sample surveys or based on data which are already available from well known large scale sample surveys such as NFHS and 2. The different features of tribes in some specific parts of this region, which are mainly based on case studies.

WORKING WOMEN AND RETIREMENT
USHVINDER KAUR ANAND
Retirement s the institutionalized separation of an individual from his or her occupational position usually on the basis of age. As a complex problem, 'Retirement' tends to focus upon the social and related losses involved in retiring including loss of income, status, identity or supporting networks within a familiar work setting. The Retirement studies are marked by either exclusion of the women or give inadequate coverage to women. Thus, the extent to which retirement affects the socio-psychological well being of women has remained largely a matter of conjecture. It needs to be seen whether retirement has the same psycho-social effects on women as in the case of men and whether retirement or continued employment has any non-economic significance at all for women. The present study is concentrated on problems of women retirees. Introduction; work orientation towards retirement; family life; economic conditions; health conditions; socio-psychological conditions of retirees; and summary and conclusion are the chapters under which the whole problem is categorically studied. This work will be helpful in exploring an area which has so far remained unresearched.
