SOCIOLOGY OF COMMUNAL VIOLENCE
DHARAM VEER MEHTA
Sociology of Communal Violence is a valuable contribution to the existing literature on this subject. Its uniqueness, however, remains as it offers the insights into the processes and issues which trigger communal conflicts in India using both the methods of a sociologist and the practical administrative experiences of a seasoned officer of the Indian Police Service. The book offers rich information abut the etiology of communal violence in the town of Moradabad in U.P. using the backdrop of the communal conflagration of the 1980, and locates this problem in the specific socio-cultural, economic and the religious demography of this town. The study draws evidence from an intensive survey of people's attitudes, values and perceptions regarding communal riots, their inter-religious images and prejudices. The empirical data generated through this method have been supplemented by researcher's extensive uses of the official diaries and interviews with key-personnel and community influentials and political leaders. The fact that the researcher himself has held a very senior position in the police hierarchy with wider and richer experiences in the management of communal law and order, endows this study with a depth of perception and diagnosis not easily available in many other studies of communal riots.
An important aspect of this book which is of much relevance to public, politicians and social scientists relates to the analysis of the "Role of the Police" in the control and management of the riot-situation. Here, various types of social and psychological pressures, the value of discipline and training of the police assume significance.
